@cstross I’m waiting for some tech Bro to name their AI Wintermute. They keep reading everything wrong, so…
I am not just another balding, overweight white guy wearing the same eyeglasses as the next balding, overweight white guy. That’s because I'm bald on top, not balding. And I’m overweight because my wife is an excellent cook and my extra pounds are just a physical manifestation of her love.
I am not the guy who drives like an idiot. I drive like your Grandma now. Most of the time. I drove like an idiot 40 years ago. Driving is overrated.
I am not the guy whose lawn looks better than yours, whose car is newer, who hosts the block party and the talks shit about everyone else on the block to his closest buddies. That’s because I hate mowing the lawn, am happy with my 10-year old car, and you’d never catch me at a block party. I like my neighbors and say hi, and bring a select few a fresh-baked nut roll at Christmastime, and I’d rather hang with my family.
I am definitely not the smartest guy in the room, nor do I ever want to be. I know that I don’t always know. I have some brains, but it took me a long time to develop any street smarts. I did well across the board but could never choose one path. I love to do many things.
Holy cow, I still have 3800+ characters?!
I think that’s enough of an intro for now. But I’ll close with these thoughts:
Mean people suck. Love and joy are everything.
Thanks for reading this far. Can’t wait to see the world through your eyes.
A project I originally developed at university three years ago is now open source: Pulse.
It’s a web app designed to support learning through spaced repetition, and it will be used in teaching at the University of Bamberg.
Firefox users, do you use my icon?
@heyheymomo yes!
Happy October everyone
@aeris Qu'il faut demander à la CNIL d'obliger le responsable du traitement à se conformer?
@nullaloi@mastodon.social Non. Que le code pénal n’existe pas…
Why isn't there a Deutsche Bahn branded USB charger? Type F plug so it doesn't lose contact all the time; with all the electronics in the plug.
Edit: Already exists. Not DB branded, but from Brennstuhl. https://www.brennenstuhl.com/de-DE/steckdosenadapter-usb-c-pd-20w-weiss
Edit 2: Thanks for the replies pointing me at the Haribo 65 W GaN charger with a Type F plug. It's bulkier, but seems to be well loved and tested by the community. https://youtu.be/xT_t5nvFcoY

Can good design stop content creators from having sex in robotaxis?
Autonomous vehicle designers have to worry about riders getting frisky in public.

halloween on a weekend this year too bad i have no friends
I've been invited to speak about copyleft and free open source software (sometimes alluded to by the phrase, "Getting Off of Big Tech") several times now. I'll be doing a Q&A at University of Minnesota in Duluth on Monday, a workshop on Getting Off Big Tech at the Resist and Build Summit in Denver in two weeks, and am now planning a similar workshop to give at a library in Northern Virginia next year! 😯🤓

Government needs to act urgently on greatest security blind spot, say former senior defence leaders - David Spratt:

@Jeanniewarner @anand Well, I'm glad he didn't try then. Never forcing the court to discredit itself certainly built a lot of political will for judiciary reform! Imagine if he'd actually used his massive supermajority in Congress and veto-proof Senate to do something and the court had overruled him. People would have been like, "Wow, I love the Supreme Court. We shouldn't reform it in any way." That's exactly how FDR did it, as I recall.
@pluralistic @Jeanniewarner @anand Trump really is the anti-FDR, pre #newdeal is the “again” in MAGA back to #sharecropping and #plantations #feudalism #segregation
RE: https://theblower.au/@gormster/117360167943613811
Alas, unless there is strong and enforced #regulation , it would be even *easier* to do this for #EVs than #petrol / #diesel #vehicles
In most (all?) countries, drivers of petrol/diesel #cars are used to seeing a "totem sign" (apologies if that is not PC term, I don't know of better ones) which shows the price of #fuel in big numbers for all to see. You can also walk round the pumps and check individual price displays.
Whereas EV chargers do not show *any* price info on the screen until the driver has put in their card/ID and possibly committed to charging their vehicle (I've checked the screens of several in motorway service stations and supermarket car parks) and there isn't any totem sign either, so every driver could already be getting individual pricing..
@vfrmedia Agree it could be much better but I should imagine most EV users going on a journey meaning they can't charge at home are going to be planning it.
In which case they're using an app that is likely to tell them prices (e.g. Electroverse)
1. The Tyranny of Structurelessness
2. AI makes everything fractally structureless
I'm sure there's a way to tie these two phenomena together into a pithy, toot length post, but it eludes me. So, you just get this. Sorry.
@jenniferplusplus the granularity of the actual information is hidden and is always second-hand
